Sir Ralph Abercromby 17341801, British general. After serving in the Seven Years War, he returned to service in 1793 against France, where he commanded a brilliant retreat in Flanders in the winter of 179495. He was (179597) commander in chief in the West Indies, where he captured Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Trinidad. In 1801, Abercromby was killed trying to expel the French from Egypt. He helped renew the discipline and reputation of the British Army.
