Ahmadnagar or Ahmednagar[both: Amudnug´ur] Pronunciation Key, city (1991 pop. 222,088), Maharashtra state, W central India, on the Sina River. It is a district administrative center and has industries in cotton and leather goods. Founded in 1490, it was the capital of a kingdom that lasted until 1600. Sivaji, leader of the Marathas, was born in Ahmadnagar.
