Amecameca[AmA´´kAmA´kA] Pronunciation Key, town (1990 pop. 25,374), Mexico state, S central Mexico, at the foot of the PopocatEpetl and IxtacIhuatl volcanoes. The sanctuary of El Sacro Monte, the most venerated spot in Mexico after the shrine of Guadalupe, stands on a hill above Amecameca. The town's history dates back to 1200.
