Americus[umer´ikus] Pronunciation Key, city (1990 pop. 16,512), seat of Sumter co., SW Ga.; inc. 1855. It is a manufacturing city (polyurethane foam, furniture, and fertilizer), a livestock market, and a processing center for the area's timber, crops (peanuts, corn, and cotton), and minerals (kaolin and bauxite). Charles Lindbergh made his first solo flight from Souther Field there. Georgia Southwestern College is in Americus. Nearby is Andersonville.
