James Asheton Bayard 17991880, U.S. Senator from Delaware (185164, 186769), b. Wilmington, Del.; son of James Asheton Bayard (17671815). His Unionist sentiments led him into the new Republican party, but he bitterly opposed the dominant radical Republicans and in 1864 he resigned. He was elected again, however, and served (186769) as a Democrat and supporter of President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policy. His son, Thomas Francis Bayard, was elected to succeed him in the U.S. Senate.
