Berry, Charles Ferdinand, duc de[shArl ferdEnAN´, dUk du berE´] Pronunciation Key, 17781820, younger son of Charles, comte d'Artois (later Charles X of France). He served in the prince de CondE's army against the French Revolution. His assassination during the reign of King Louis XVIII : an attempt to extinguish the Bourbon line : gave the ultraroyalists the opportunity to turn Louis XVIII against the liberals. Berry's posthumous son was Henri, comte de Chambord.
