Brookline[brook´lIn] Pronunciation Key, town (1990 pop. 54,718), Norfolk co., E Mass., a suburb adjacent to Boston; settled 1630s, set off from Boston and inc. 1705. It was known as "Muddy River" when part of Boston. The town is known for its affluent population, and the first U.S. country club was opened there. The birthplace of President John F. Kennedy in Brookline is a national historic site. Other points of interest are the poet Amy Lowell's home and an antique auto museum. Brookline is the site of Hebrew College and Hellenic College.
