Caesarea Palestinae[sesurE´u palistI´nE, sezu, sEzu] Pronunciation Key, old city, NW Palestine, c.20 mi (32 km) S of Mt. Carmel. It was taken (104 B.C.) by Alexander Jannaeus, leader of the Maccabees, and was made (30 B.C.) the capital of Herod the Great. The Jewish citizens were massacred by the Romans in A.D. 66.
