George Leonard Carey 1935–, archbishop of Canterbury (1991–2002). From a working-class background, he graduated from the London School of Divinity in 1962 and was ordained the same year. Carey was appointed bishop of Bath and Wells in 1987 and was enthroned as the 103d archbishop of Canterbury in 1991, succeeding Robert Runcie. Opposed to "extreme" liberalism in the Church of England, he has strong ties to the church's Anglo-Catholic and evangelical wings and championed the ordination of women. Carey became known as the "green bishop" for his environmental activism while bishop of Bath and Wells. He retired in 2002 and was succeeded by Rowan Williams.
