Ciudad de la Habana[syOOthAth´ thA lA hAbA´nA, hAvA´–] Pronunciation Key or La Habana, province (1994 est. pop. 2,400,000), W Cuba. Havana is the capital. The province has coastal plains in the north and south, as well as fine beaches, and there are some low mountains in the north. Included in the province is the Isle of Youth (see Youth, Isle of). The Almendares and the Jaruco are the main rivers. The majority of the population and industry is concentrated in and around Havana. Tobacco, sugarcane, and vegetables are the principal crops of the province, and food processing is the leading industry. Tourism was economically important until the United States and Cuba severed relations in 1960. Tourism from countries besides the United States has been encouraged since 1990.
