Charles Robert Cockerell[kok´urul] Pronunciation Key, 1788–1863, English architect, archaeologist, and writer. While excavating at Bassae, Aegina, and other sites in Italy, Greece, and Asia Minor, he studied the remains of ancient architecture and designed restorations for the temple of Zeus at Agrigento, Sicily. In 1819 he was appointed surveyor of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and in 1833 he became chief architect of the Bank of England, designing the buildings at Bristol, Liverpool, and Manchester and making alterations in the London branch. His works include the Taylor buildings, Oxford; Hanover Chapel, London; and the National Monument, Edinburgh. He completed the interior of St. George's Hall, Liverpool. Most of Cockerell's works bear the stamp of the classic revival, of which he was a notable exponent.
