Related Category: British And Irish History, Biographies

Henry Seymour Conway 1721–95, English soldier and politician; nephew of Robert Walpole. Early in his life he entered upon concurrent and distinguished military and parliamentary careers. He fell into disfavor with George III for defending John Wilkes and was dismissed (1764) from his commands. He served (1765–68) as a secretary of state and voiced his dislike of the Stamp Act. In 1782 he helped bring about Lord North's resignation for his handling of the struggle with the North American colonies.
