David Daiches[dA´chEz] Pronunciation Key, 1912, British critic, b. Sunderland. A graduate of Edinburgh Univ. and Oxford, Daiches has taught at several English universities and written many valuable works of criticism. They include The Novel and the Modern World (1939), A Study of Literature (1948), A Critical Approach to Literature (1956), A Critical History of English Literature (1960), and More Literary Essays (1968). He has also written studies of Burns, Milton, Boswell, Scott, Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf, and a biography of Charles Edward Stuart. His recent works include guides to cultural monuments in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the British Isles.
