Dalberg, Karl Theodor, Freiherr von[kArl tA´udOr´´ frI´her fOn dAl´berk] Pronunciation Key, 17441817, German statesman, of an ancient noble family prominent in imperial service. He was archbishop-elector of Mainz (18023) and, as such, archchancellor of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1803 the seat of the archbishopric was moved to Regensburg. A faithful collaborator of Napoleon I, Dalberg became (180613) prince-primate of the Confederation of the Rhine and grand duke of Frankfurt (181013). Dalberg was known for his humane and enlightened outlook.
