doomsday 2000, term coined by Canadian computer consultant Peter de Jager in 1993 to describe the operational and financial impact of a defect in computer hardware and software that causes it to incorrectly perform arithmetic or logic operations involving a date beyond Dec. 31, 1999. In the late 1990s corporations and governments spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours to correct the problem and avert the potential consequences. See Year 2000 problem.
