Draga[drA´gA] Pronunciation Key, 18671903, queen consort of King Alexander of Serbia. A widow and a lady in waiting to the king's mother, Draga Masin (Mashin) was accused by general rumor of a shady and promiscuous past. In 1900 the infatuated king shocked his nation by marrying her. Her unpopularity, especially in army circles, was aggravated by the subsequent political measures of the king. In 1903 an army clique, headed by Colonel Alexander Masin, a brother of the queen's first husband, formed a conspiracy. A regiment occupied the palace, and the king and queen were brutally murdered.
