Grantham[gran´tum, –thum] Pronunciation Key, town (1991 pop. 30,700), in the Parts of Kesteven, Lincolnshire, E central England, on the Witham River. Grantham is an agricultural center and railroad junction. Mechanical engineering works produce diesel engines and road rollers. Landmarks include St. Wulfram's Church, with its 280-ft (85-m) steeple; Angel Inn, where in 1483 Richard III condemned the duke of Buckingham to death; a bronze statue (on St. Peter's Hill) of Sir Isaac Newton, who attended King's School in Grantham; and George Hotel, described by Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby. At Grantham in 1643, Oliver Cromwell won his first victory over the royalists.
