Aleksandr Tichonovich Gretchaninov[ulyiksAn´dur tEkOnO´vich grechAnE´nof] Pronunciation Key, 18641956, Russian composer; pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov. Among his works are four symphonies, two operas, a setting of the Russian Orthodox service, and sacred choral works. His music has the rich sonorities and harmonic variety typical of late romanticism. In 1939 he came to the United States, where he remained until his death.
