Gabriel Hanotaux[gAbrEel´ AnOtO´] Pronunciation Key, 18531944, French historian and statesman. Twice minister of foreign affairs (189495, 189598), he greatly furthered the Franco-Russian rapprochement. His chief fame is as a historian, notably as the author of Contemporary France (4 vol., 19038; tr., 4 vol., 19039) and Histoire de la fondation de la troisiEme rEpublique (4 vol., 192526). He also edited the Histoire de la nation franCaise (15 vol., 192527).
