Hatshepsut[hAtshep´soot] Pronunciation Key, d. 1468 B.C., queen of ancient Egypt, of the XVIII dynasty; daughter of Thutmose I. She managed to rule Egypt by relegating her husband, Thutmose II (see under Thutmose I), to the background. After his death, she continued in power as regent to his son, Thutmose III. Her reign (1486–1468) was peaceful, and she developed the resources of Egypt, reviving the mining at Sinai. She built the famous temple at Deir el Bahari in W Thebes.
