Jean Jules Jusserand[zhAN zhUl zhUsurAN´] Pronunciation Key, 1855–1932, French diplomat and author, b. Lyon. After service in London, Constantinople, and Copenhagen, he was ambassador to the United States (1902–25). A close friend of every U.S. President during the period, he did much to promote friendly Franco-American relations and to win the United States to the Allied side in World War I. Jusserand was also a noted scholar; his works include English Wayfaring Life in the Middle Ages (tr. 1889), Shakespeare in France (1898), a life of Ronsard (1913), and With Americans of Past and Present Days (1916), the first work on U.S. history to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize.
