James Lenox[len´uks] Pronunciation Key, 1800–1880, American bibliophile and philanthropist, b. New York City. Lenox was a founder of the Presbyterian Hospital, New York City. He amassed a fine collection of paintings and books that, as the Lenox Library, became part of the New York Public Library in 1895 and in 1913 was moved to the central library. The Frick Collection stands on the library's former Fifth Avenue site.
