LesdiguiEres, FranCois de Bonne, duc de[frANswA´ du bOn dUk du lAdEgyer´] Pronunciation Key, 15431626, marshal and constable of France. He fought on the Huguenot (Protestant) side in the Wars of Religion and in 1575 became chief of the Huguenots of the DauphinE. He supported Henry of Navarre (King Henry IV) and in 1590 took Grenoble from the Catholic League. He fought a series of campaigns against Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy, and was made a marshal by Henry IV in 1609. After his abjuration of Protestantism (1622) he became constable of France under King Louis XIII. Upon his death Richelieu abolished the office of constable.
