JosE LOpez Portillo y Pacheco[lO´pAz pOrtE´yO E pAchAkO] Pronunciation Key, 1920, Mexican political leader and president (197682). A lawyer and university professor, he wrote novels and works on political theory. He served (197375) as finance minister under President EcheverrIa, whom he succeeded. As president, LOpez Portillo developed Mexico's oil reserves, but faced a national financial crisis at the end of his term. He also served as a mediator in Pan-American disputes.
