Armand Jacques Leroy de Saint-Arnaud[ArmAN´ zhAk lurwA´ du saNtArnO´] Pronunciation Key, 1798?–1854, marshal of France. After serving in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria from 1837, he was one of the generals summoned from Africa by Louis Napoleon (later Napoleon III) to support his coup of Dec., 1851. As minister of war, Saint-Arnaud supported bloody repression of workers' resistance to the coup. He commanded the French troops in the Crimean War and won the victory of the Alma shortly before he died of cholera.
