Santa Monica[san´tu mon´iku] Pronunciation Key, city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Missiles, aircraft parts, electronic equipment, ceramics, chemicals, leather goods, furniture, and optical instruments are among the city's many diverse manufactures. Aerospace and communications industries also contribute significantly to Santa Monica's economy, and the RAND Corp., the noted think-tank, has its headquarters there. The city has a 3-mi (4.8-km) oceanfront beach that includes the Pier, with amusement rides and an aquarium; nearby are several state parks. Historic Route 66 ended in Santa Monica.
