Sorocaba[soorookA´bu] Pronunciation Key, city (1996 pop. 431,370), SAo Paulo state, S Brazil, on the Sorocaba River. It is a transportation hub and a manufacturing center where textiles, cement, vegetable oils, and agricultural machinery are made. Natural resources in the municipal area include iron, gold, and silver. Sorocaba, established in 1661, was famous in the 19th cent. for its cattle fairs and iron foundry.
