Subotica[sOO´´bO´titsA] Pronunciation Key, Ger. Maria Theresiopel or Theresiopel, Hung. Szabadka, city (1991 pop. 100,386), N Serbia and Montenegro, in the Vojvodina region of Serbia. An important railway junction and an industrial center, it has factories that produce metal goods, fertilizer, furniture, and agricultural machinery. Originally a Roman outpost, Subotica became a royal free city of Hungary until its transfer by the Treaty of Trianon (1920) to Yugoslavia (reconstituted in 2003 as Serbia and Montenegro).
