swinoujscie[shfEnOOO´Eshche] Pronunciation Key, Ger. SwinemUnde, town (1993 est. pop. 46,300), Zachodniopomorskie prov., NW Poland, on the island of Usedom, at the mouth of the swina River. It is the outer port for Szczecin and a fishing center and seaside resort. The first mention of the town dates from 1181. In 1765, the town became part of the Prussian province of Pomerania; it passed to Poland in 1945. During World War II the town was a German naval base.
