Near Detmold is a monument (the Hermannsdenkmal ) commemorating the victory (A.D. 9) of the Germans under Arminius (or Hermann, in modern German) over the Roman legions under Varus. The war (late 8th cent.) between Charlemagne and the Saxon Widukind took place in this region.
