Warrington, city (1991 pop. 81,366) and borough, Chesire, NW England, on the Mersey River and on the Manchester Ship Canal. Manufactures include wire and other metal products, chemicals, soap, leather goods, and beer. The site was early occupied; the Church of St. Elphin has a Saxon crypt. The grammar school dates from 1526, and there are several half-timbered houses. Warrington academy for religious dissenters (175783) included Joseph Priestley among its faculty.
