Waterbury, industrial city (1990 pop. 108,961), New Haven co., W Conn., on the Naugatuck River; settled 1674, inc. as a city 1853. It is a financial and commercial center of W Connecticut. The city's brass industry dates from the mid-18th cent. Clocks and watches, tools, instruments, plastics, chemicals, and electronic parts are among the many other manufactures of Waterbury. The city's historical society has notable collections. Waterbury is the site of a branch of the Univ. of Connecticut, Post College, and a state technical college.
