17 mi/27 km SSW of Lafayette, on the Vermilion
R., with access to the Intracoastal Waterway to S.; 29°58'N
92°07'W. Trade and processing center for a region of rice and
sugarcane fields; fishing (crawfish, alligator, crab); mfg. (chemical
prods., consumer goods). In the colorful Cajun country, Abbeville was
settled (1843) by descendants of Acadians from N.S., Canada, and was
laid out like a Fr. town. It grew around the St. Mary Magdalen R.C.
church, built in 1845, and preserves much of the early atmosphere in
