Absaroka Range
(ab-suh-RO-kuh), range of Rocky Mts. in S Mont.
and NW Wyo., bet. Yellowstone R. (W and N) and Bighorn Basin (E);
extends c.150 mi/241 km S from Yellowstone R.
SW of Livingston, Mont., to Wind R. valley (Wyo.). Beartooth Range, a NE spur, includes Granite Peak
(12,799 ft/3,901 m), highest peak in Mont. The
Absarokas are highest at Mt. Frances
(13,136 ft/4,004 m; sometimes called Franks
Peak), c.40 mi/64 km SSW of Cody, Wyo. Other
summits over 12,000 ft/3,660 m include
Washakie Needles (12,524 ft/3,817 m), Needle
Mt. (12,106 ft/3,690 m), Fortress Mt.
(12,085 ft/3,684 m), Dead Indian Peak
(12,216 ft/3,723 m), Trout Peak
(12,244 ft/3,732 m), Mt. Crosby
(12,449 ft/3,794 m), all in Wyo.; and Cold Mt.
(12,610 ft/3,844 m), in Mont. Range. The range
divide forms E boundary of Yellowstone Natl. Park, and is the source of
tributaries of the Bighorn and the Yellowstone rivers; it includes
Absaroka Natl. Forest and part of Custer Natl. Forest in Mont.,
Shoshone Natl. Forest in Wyo. Sylvan Pass
(8,559 ft/2,609 m), near E boundary of
Yellowstone Natl. Park, and Ishawooa Pass
(9,870 ft/3,008 m),
10 mi/16 km E of park, cross range in Wyo.
Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area covers most of Mont. part of range.
Including Pinnacle Mt., Cutoff Mt., Haystock Park, and
Livingston Park.
