Ackia Battleground National Monument
(uh-KEE-uh), NE Miss.,
7 mi/11.3 km NW of Tupelo. Marks site of
battle of Ackia (May 1736), in which Chickasaw Indians, aided by
English, defeated combined force of Fr. troops and Choctaw Indians.
Result was opening of region to Eng. settlement. Absorbed by Natchez
Trace Parkway (unit of natl. park system). Covers 49
acres/20 ha; est. 1938.
