Agabama River
(ah-gah-BAH-mah),
c.73 mi/118 km long, central Cuba; rises in
hills of Santa Clara (Villa Clara prov.); flows S to a delta on the
Caribbean Sea, 12 mi/19 km SE of Trinidad
(Sancti Spiritus prov.); 21°40'N 79°50'W. Drains
1,713 sq mi/4,437 sq km of land.
Its lower course is called Manati, which passes through the
UNESCO-declared World Heritage site of the Iznaga valley (also known as
the valley of sugar mills), the prime sugar-producing region of
the world in the first 4 decades of the 19th cent., before
mechanization. Only 1 sugar mill operates on its banks today.
