industrialists at the turn of the century, Aiken is also an industrial
city, Mfg. includes apparel, printing and publishing, drugs, chemicals,
industrial prods. Agr. includes poultry, livestock; grain, peanuts,
cotton, peaches. The mild climate and its location within the sandhills
region have made it a prime training area for Thoroughbreds. Kaolin
mines are nearby. The Univ. of S.C. at Aiken is located in the city.
Nearby is the Dept. of Energy's Savannah R. Nuclear Plant, site of
nuclear breeder reactor project which was abandoned in mid-1980s. Also
nuclear weapons dismantling plant and a commercial nuclear waste
disposal site, which caused controversy for accepting waste from
