Santa Fe). Produces hay, soybeans, corn, vegetables, peanuts, cotton,
tobacco, citrus fruit, nuts (pecan, tung); livestock; lumber; and naval
stores. Quarries limestone, phosphate, and flint in W. Named for a
local ranch, Alachua means the sink from a combination of Span.
and Seminole words, and is thought to refer to a chasm
2.5 mi/4 km SE of Gainesville. The Univ. of
Fla. and Santa Fe Community Col. are located in Gainesville. Marjorie
Kinnan Rawlings Historical Site in Hawthorne. Formed 1824 from a part
of St. Johns co.
