Calif., suburb 3 mi/4.8 km S of downtown
Oakland and 7 mi/11.3 km of downtown of San
Francisco, on an island formed by Oakland harbor just off the
E shore of San Francisco Bay; 37°45'N 122°17'W. Mfg. (printing and
publishing, electronics, plastics prods., food, consumer goods,
machinery). It is primarily residential and has excellent beaches,
parks, and leisure-boating facilities. The Alameda Naval Air Station, a
large U.S. carrier base to W, is scheduled by the Pentagon to be
closed. An important Coast Guard base and Col. of Alameda (2-year) are
also here. The city is connected with Oakland, Calif., on the mainland
by 4 bridges and 2 tunnels. Metropolitan Oakland Internatl. Airport to
SE. San Leandro Bay separates city from Bay Farm Isl. (bridged and now
a peninsula) to S. Settled 1850, inc. as a city 1884
