Otero co., S N.Mex., 68 mi/109 km NE of Las
Cruces, on E side of Tularosa Valley, a wide dessert plain; 32°52'N
105°57'W. Elev. 4,335 ft/1,321 m. Holloman
Air Force Base (1990 pop. 5,891), hq. of the 49th fighter wing and Ger.
Tactical Training Center is 10 mi/16 km WSW,
and the White Sands Missile Range (main entrance and facilities) is
located 45 mi/72 km SW of Alamogordo. Trinity
Site, where the first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945, is
55 mi/89 km NNW. The city was founded in 1898
with the arrival of the Southern Pacific RR. Mfg. (refrigerators,
printing and publishing, wood molding, meat packing, concrete prods.).
