, city (1990 pop. 78,122), Dougherty co., SW Ga.,
on the Flint R.; 31°35'N 84°11'W. It is the industrial center of a
pecan and peanut area. Airport. Among its many industries are agr.
(peanut and pecan) processing, meat-packing, and cotton milling. Mfg.
includes concrete, printing and publishing, fertilizer, millwork and
lumber, construction materials, transportation equip., food, plastics
and paper prods. Albany State Univ. and Darton Col. are units of the
Univ. System of Ga. The Albany Naval Air Station, and a U.S. marine
corps supply center are in the city. Scene of major rioting during
civil rights struggle of the mid-1960s. A severe flood damaged the city
in 1994. The Ga. Pecan Festival is held here annually. Nearby are
Chehaw State Park and the popular resort, Radium Springs. Inc. 1841.
