During the Civil War the city was burned (May 1864) to the ground by
Union troops. Alexandria is the hq. for Kisatchie Natl. Forest and the
seat of a branch of La. State Univ. at Alexandria. La. Col. is in its
neighboring twin city of Pineville. Home of Alexandria Natl. Cemetery.
