All-American Canal
, 80 mi/129 km long,
SE Calif., part of the federal irrigation system of the Hoover Dam.
Built bet. 1934 and 1940 across the Colorado Desert, the canal is
entirely within the U.S. and replaces the Inter-Calif. Canal, which
passes through Mexico. Comes within
1 mi/1.6 km of Mex. border in 3 places. The
Imperial Dam, NE of Yuma, Ariz., diverts water from the Colorado R.
into the All-Amer. Canal, which runs W to Calexico, Calif. Smaller
canals move water into the Imperial Valley; the Coachella Canal
branches NW to the Coachella Valley; also Alamo R. branches N to Salton
Sea; W of Calexico, canal and New R. branches N to Salton Sea and canal
turns N becoming Westside Main Canal, also to Salton Sea. Canal and its
branches entirely within Imperial co. This canal system irrigates more
than 630,000 acres/254,961 ha and has greatly increased crop
yield in the area; however, problems of drainage and salinity
exist.
