Cherokee, and Cobb cos., NW Ga., on Etowah R.,
34 mi/55 km NW of Atlanta and
4 mi/6.4 km E of Cartersville;
36 mi/58 km, with
c.10-mi/16-km-long S arm; 34°09'N 84°45'W. Max. capacity
722,000 acre-ft. Little R. enters from E. Formed by Allatoona Dam
(190 ft/58 m high,
1,250 ft/381 m long), built (1950) for flood
control, power generation, recreation, and navigation. Dam was initial
part in comprehensive plan for development of Alabama-Coosa river
