Allegheny Plateau
(A-luh-GAI-nee), dissected plateau, W part of
the Appalachian Mts., extending
c.500 mi/805 km SW from N Pa. to SW Va.,
including W Md., rising to 4,860 ft/1,481 m at
Spruce Knob, the highest peak in W.Va. The E Allegheny Plateau, known
as the Allegheny Mts. or the Alleghenies, has a steep E-facing
escarpment often called the Allegheny Front
(c.1,500 ft/460 m-1,600 ft/490 m
high) and is more rugged than the W portion. The plateau, consisting of
flat-laying sedimentary rock, has been subsequently eroded to produce a
rugged boundary. The mts. are rich in coal and timber, petroleum, and
natural gas. Also Backbone Mt.
(3,360 ft/1,024 m), highest point in Md.
