Almendares River
(ahl-main-DAHR-ais),
27 mi/43 km long, Ciudad de La Habana prov., W
Cuba; rises E of Tapaste; flows W and N to the Florida Straits,
3.5 mi/5.6 km W of Havana Harbor; 23°07'N
82°25'W. Serves as water supply and green area for Havana. Cascades
(Husillo) along its course. Source for Albear Aqueduct, built in 1592
(which follows path of current Zanja Street in Havana), 1st in the New
World of Eur. construction and which gave Havana its official
city status.
