Alpena (al-PEE-nuh), city (1990 pop. 11,354), Alpena co., N Mich., 100 mi/161 km NNE of Bay City, on Thunder Bay, an arm of L. Huron; 45°04'N 83°26'W. RR junction. Limestone quarried nearby is used to make cement, Alpena's chief mfg. prod. Cement and limestone are transported on the Great Lakes by way of Alpena's harbor. Tourism; the city lies in a year-round resort area and has an annual winter carnival. Phelps-Collins Aiport to W. Alpena Community Col., Besser Mus. and Planetarium (on campus). Inc. 1871.
