1,113), E Calif.; Markleeville; 38°35'N 119°48'W. Along
crest of the Sierra Nevada S of L. Tahoe; most of co. in natl. forests:
El Dorado (N), Toiyabe (E of Sierra divide) and Stanislaus (W of Sierra
divide); bounded NE by Nev. state line. Includes Sonora Peak
(11,429 ft/3,484 m) and Stanislaus Peak
(11,202 ft/3,414 m). Pacific Crest Trail and
divide of Sierra Nevada runs N-S through center of co. Mts. are crossed
here by Kit Carson (or Carson) Pass and Ebbetts Pass (highways).
Drained by North Fork Mokelumne R., Middle and Clark forks of the
Stanislaus, and E and W forks of Carson R. (all of these have their
sources in co.). Clark fork of Stanislaus forms S boundary. Hunting,
fishing, camping; includes Alpine and Blue lakes, mineral springs.
Alpine Village 5 mi/8 km N of Markleeville.
Little agr., chiefly hay; some beef-cattle and sheep grazing. Some gold
mining. Had silver boom from 1850s to 1870s; ruins of silver towns
(Silver Mt., Silver King, Monitor) remain, west side of famous Comstock
Lode (Virginia City, Yerington, Nev). Formed 1864. Grover Hot Springs
State Park in N. Kirkwood Ski Resort in NW.
