Amherst , town (1990 pop. 35,228), Hampshire co., central Mass., in a fertile farm area; 42°22'N 72°31'W. Named for Lord Jeffrey Amherst, seat of the Univ. of Mass., Hampshire Col., and Amherst Col. Emily Dickinson b. here and lived here all her life. Other well-known individuals include: Helen Hunt Jackson (also b. here), Ray Stannard Baker, Eugene Field, Robert Frost, and Noah Webster all lived here. Inc. 1759. Includes town of North Amherst (1990 pop. 6239).
