connecting with Houston ship channel; fishing; tourist trade. Oil
wells, agr. (rice, soybeans), cattle ranching in area. An important
early port, it was the scene of clashes (1832, 1835) in which
Anglo-Amer. settlers successfully opposed Mex. officials.
Ruins of old Fort Anahuac (1830) are near. L. Anahuac to N; Anahuac
Natl. Wildlife Refuge to SE. Inc. after 1940.
